Catherine of Genoa

Catherine of Genoa
(1447–1510)
   Saint, Mystic and Devotional Writer.
Catherine was born Caterinetta Fieschi in Liguria, Italy, of a noble family. She was married at a very early age, but when she was twenty-seven she was released from her marriage vows. Her husband became a Franciscan Tertiary, but Catherine remained independent and dedicated herself to nursing the sick in St Laurence Hospital, Genoa. She led an intensely austere and spiritual life and produced two devotional classics, the Dialogues on the Soul and the Body and the Treatise on Purgatory. She was the subject of an important study on mysticism written by Baron von Hügel.
